A.J. Ellis
Artist Bio:
Alexander J Ellis is a game designer, programmer, and 3D modeler from Ellicott City, Maryland.
Growing up, his consistent fascination with the beauty and technology of cars went hand-in-hand with his creativity and love for gaming. His work calls back to the nostalgic racing games and vehicles they featured that built this passion. To him, cars themselves are art that is expressed through design and experienced through driving. He enables players to do both in a virtual environment through his gaming and simulation projects.
Artist Statement:
I model cars in 3D and use them as video game assets – particularly as mods for racing games. Currently I work with older titles from the Need for Speed series, which are an ideal medium because car customization is a built-in feature of gameplay. My cars almost always include multiple parts that can be changed in-game by the player, and these include body kits, spoilers, and hoods. The result is that, in addition to virtual driving, users interact with my art by personalizing it though gameplay.
I have had a lifelong love for cars, racing, gaming, and modding. Cars themselves I see as art, and this art is experienced through driving and customization, whether virtual or in reality. Modifying cars enables the driver to further express himself or herself, and my modifications for video games expand this expression beyond reality to the internet for people who may not be able to do so otherwise. I am driven to create this content by an intense overflow of car design ideas that never stops racing through my mind. Gamers can download these car mods from my website for games such as Need for Speed: Most Wanted (’05). I intend to breathe new life into these games with my mods by matching the game’s art style to achieve a professional-looking result. It also brings players together as they join my community of followers and work together with me to make more mods like these.
