Nyla McGrier

Artist Bio:

Nyla McGrier who was born and raised in Maryland, is pursuing her associates degree in visual art at Howard Community College with her main mediums being traditional drawing and printmaking, but she also does works on photoshop as well. McGrier’s drawings and prints use exaggerated afros covering the subjects faces to put a spotlight on african excellence specifically african women. Her works on photoshop also use afros as well but more so as showing the subjects to be more goddess like.  Not only that she uses bright pastel colors for themes that would normally be done with darker colors such as skulls and demons.

Artist Statement:

I grew up not seeing very much representation of black people, specifically black girls. When I started creating art I realized I could represent my community myself through my art. I see black women as,strong, powerful and magical, and that is how I showcase them in my artwork. I particularly have most if not all my pieces to have women with afros in them because that is what is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of a strong black person;their hair. I also have most of my pieces with faceless women, not because I do not know how to draw faces but because these pieces represent not just one subject but all black women. When people view my work and see these bright pastels on sassy demons, or black women with fabulous afros they should think that the person in that piece is strong, magical and much more.
