Student Invitational Exhibitions

To the participants of the Howard Community College Student Invitational Exhibition,

2020 has been a year or tribulations, personal and global strife, and academic uncertainty. Yet here, in this virtual space, the celebration of your triumph and creative ingenuity serves as a reminder that even during the most uncertain of times, we can find our collective voices through the creation of art.  As Chair of Visual Arts, I take great pride in knowing that we have a community of students who dedicate their time and passion to a means of creative expression – one that has the potential to change both individual and societal discourse.

Art has the power to challenge our beliefs, points of view, or outlooks on the past, present, and future. As young artists blossoming during a time of social and academic upheaval, you have the unique opportunity to create art, in the moment, that emboldens yourself and your community. Whether your art is a search for political understanding, a therapeutic voice of healing, or simply an exploration of technique or materials, in the end your work is a personal response to the experiences you share as a collective body of Visual Arts students at Howard Community College.

Your faculty, family, and friends are honored to join you in this celebration of your accomplishments. For those continuing with studies in the arts, I challenge you to push yourself. Never settle for mediocrity. The arts are a powerful gift, one that evolves through ongoing learning and investigation. For those whom the arts are not part of your foreseeable academic path – remember what you have learned and achieved. Apply your creativity to all endeavors you choose to tackle.

Congratulations to the artists of the Howard Community College Student Invitational Exhibition.

Sincerely,

Jeremy Bomberg

Chair of Visual Arts
